Who Shares Your Birthday – February

2023 is the year for consistency for me – consistency in my home life, my work life and in my blog life!  My commitment is to do at least one blog post a month and work up to two by mid-year. So, keeping that in mind, here is the next entry for Who Shares Your Birthday!

For all the Who Shares Your Birthday blog posts, they have been ancestors. This time, I decided to focus on someone that is still in our presence and always makes himself known when he is in your presence – my dad, Grant Irving Briggs.

The reason I decided to do this is two-fold: first, because it’s been 3 years since his open-heart surgery, and we are so thankful it was done so he’s still making his “jokes”; second, because I really could not find an ancestor interesting enough to make themselves known (really, there wasn’t anyone with a birthday in February!).

I should also mention, we do have another family member in our midst with a birthday in February – Happy Birthday to Bradley!

Now, let’s get to know my dad. Grant Irving Briggs (Dad) was born February 6, 1940, in New Westminster, BC to Stanley Leonard Briggs and Irene Stella Hartford Matthew (Grandma & Grandpa).

At the time of Dad’s birth, Grandma and Grandpa made their home at one of two addresses: 1716 London Street, New Westminster or 1591 16th Avenue, Burnaby, BC. The reason why I say this is the 1939 City Directory for Stanley Briggs listed the first address, the 1940 City Directory listed the second address. Sometime between the two City Directories (not sure when the information was collected and when the City Directory was produced), they had moved.

Dad has two siblings. His sister, Irene “Evelyn” was born in 1943, and his brother, Stanley “Richard” was born in 1944.

Dad started Grade 1 at Stride Avenue Elementary School. According to Dad, they moved sometime during that year (about halfway through the school year) to 830 Henley Street, New Westminster, and then he went to Lord Kelvin Elementary School in New Westminster. He then went to Vincent Massey Junior High School and Lester Pearson High School where he graduated in 1957.

After Dad graduated from high school, he continued his education going to the School of Psychiatric Nursing at Essondale.

Grant’s first daughter, Cristine Godwin, was born January 29, 1959. Cris was given up for adoption to wonderful parents at that time. Fortunately, for our family, she reached out to Dad after her adoptive parents had passed away. We are so blessed to have her and her family in our lives!

In 1960, he moved to 11705 – 72nd Avenue, Nth Delta with his parents.  Grandma and Grandpa still owned the house on Henley Street as a rental property.

Dad graduated from the Psychiatric Nursing program March 1961:

During the summer of 1960, Dad met my mother, Jeannette Marguerite Marie Gobin. They married June 30, 1962.

Dad did start his professional career in psychiatric nursing but felt there was such an influx of female nurses into psychiatric nursing that he would not be able to progress as he had hoped. They had a visit from their life insurance agent that began the start of his new career in life insurance. It didn’t last very long as he did not feel right about trying to sell insurance to people that may not be able to afford it. So, he had a relative that was a truck driver and so as they say, the rest is history! Dad was a truck driver until he retired from Aggressive Transport as an owner-operator. In his own words, it was the best decision he made!

Mom and Dad made their homes in many places until they finally settled with their young family in Port Coquitlam, BC. They had three children:  Veronica (Vicky), Ronald and Shawn.

One of the things I can remember about Dad as I was growing up, is he was a hard-working husband and father, having hardly ever missed a day of work. He did have a couple of times when he was sidelined from work, and it really did drive him nuts as he loved to keep busy. He still does to this day.

Having open heart surgery in November 2019, the recuperation was hard for Dad. He just wanted to get outside and continue with the day-to-day activities he was doing before surgery. It took a while to recover, however he is still out and about puttering around.

Dad is an aspiring musician and I say that light heartedly! He has an ear for music which is something I wish I had been able to pick up. There was always music in the house (much to Mom’s chagrin!) for as long as I can remember. He plays the piano, guitar and steel guitar (and probably some others!), and still practices the guitar daily.

Mom and Dad have made their home in 100 Mile House having moved there several years ago. Just this past year, they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. First picture is from their 25th wedding anniversary:

I hope you have gotten to know my dad a little bit more. Trust me, he is quite the character and loves to show it!

Please help me in wishing my dad a Happy 83rd Birthday! Hoping to go visit Mom and Dad soon so I can wish him a happy birthday personally.

Have a great week everyone – take care and be safe!

60th Wedding Anniversary Celebration

I’m back and hopefully will be for a long time to come. Yes, I have been away for awhile taking care of some medical issues and all is good now! This seemed like a good time to make my return to the We Are Family Briggs blog.

This time last week Sunday, the Briggs family reunited on the lawns of Irving House in New Westminster, BC, to celebrate the 60th wedding anniversary of my parents, Grant & Jeannette Briggs. Some family members were not able to make it which we certainly missed (my youngest brother and his family, some cousins and a couple of my mother’s brothers).

Grant & Jeannette married on June 30, 1962, at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Maillardville. They started their life together in New Westminster moving to Port Coquitlam in 1971. They lived there until the early 80’s moving to Langley. In 2004, they made the big move to the little town of 100 Mile House and live there today.

They have three children, Veronica (me, born in 1962), Ronald (1964; wife Kim) and Shawn (1969; wife Michelle). As well, my father has a daughter, Cris (1959; husband Gary).

They have also been blessed with 9 grandchildren (Justin, Nichelle (Braydon), Amanda (Jack), Taylor, Jeremy, Cole, Dale, Maielle & Shia) and 4 great-grandchildren (Elijah, Levi, Elodie & Blake). Sadly, two great-grandchildren, Elliott & Ezra have passed.

In New Westminster, the Briggs family has a family home, Irving House. This home is now a heritage site, and is part of New Westminster’s and our history. We decided to have a picnic on the lawns of the home as our ancestors may have done in the late 1800s to the early 1900s. I won’t go on about the history of Irving House – that’s for another post!

The New West Record (local newspaper) was invited to join us and put together a wonderful article and video which I invite you all to view – they did a wonderful job and we are very thankful.

Also attending was New West City Councillor Jaimie McEvoy who made a presentation on behalf of the City to Mom & Dad for their 60th – a job well done!

A good time was had by all! I have to say a special thank you to the Heritage Program of New Westminster in helping me to set all this up, to the volunteers and staff at Irving House for their time and patience, and most of all to all the family who attended and made my parents’ celebration all that more special! They were very happy to see everyone.

Happy Anniversary, Mom & Dad with many more to come!

Video Interview Alert!

We’re on a roll with the interviews!  A lot of planning and scheduling goes into setting up and completing the interview but once done, it’s a wonderful feeling of accomplishment for all parties involved.

The next interview will be with my Uncle Rich, also known as Stanley Richard Briggs. He is the youngest child of Stanley and Irene Briggs, and father of three great kids, Michael, Shannon and Dennis.

I was very excited to do this interview because honestly, I really don’t know my Uncle Rich that well.  Yep, I know, hard to believe!  Being the youngest, I have to say his memory is phenomenal – I’m amazed at some of his stories and the clarity with which he relates those memories.  When he starts to answer a question, another story pops into his head – it’s wonderful!  I will definitely have to do another video or two so get ready, Uncle Rich – we’re going to get to know each other very well!

One question Uncle Rich had for my dad’s (Grant Briggs) video interview was, “When do I get the $50 you got for selling my car?”  My dad’s answer was, “Is he that hard up he needs the money now?” Well, let’s see if we have a response from Uncle Rich – I love sibling rivalry!

In the meantime, to get prepared for Uncle Rich’s interview, I did a short interview with my dad, talking about his brother, Richard.

Enjoy this short interview with my dad, Grant – and get ready for Richard’s interview next weekend.

Video Interview Alert!!

Video Interview Alert!!

Yes – it’s time for another video interview!  I’m sooooo excited!!  The interview with my dad, Grant, was the first one I’ve ever done and now I have another one done.  A lot of planning and scheduling goes into setting up and completing the interview but once done, it’s a wonderful feeling of accomplishment for all parties involved.

The next interview will be with my Aunt Ev, also known as Irene “Evelyn” Layton (nee Briggs & previously Murray).  She is the middle child and only daughter of Stanley and Irene Briggs.

I’m hoping everyone will get to know and love Ev as much as I do – I mean, she is one of my favourite aunts (along with my Aunt Bea)!  She is an amazing lady and a wonderful mother, and raised three loving and caring daughters, my cousins Sandy, Lynda and Donna.

In the meantime, to get prepared for Ev’s interview, I did a short interview with my dad, talking about his sister Evelyn.  If anyone knows either of these two, you will know that they have a teasing, fun relationship that occurs a couple of times a year around each of their birthdays!

As I mentioned in earlier blog posts, I’m hoping to travel to the United Kingdom in about two to three years with the hopes of trying to verify more information that I have found.

Again, if anyone is interested in going through the Briggs ancestry research with me, I would be ecstatic to have someone beside me discovering more about our family! So please send me a message if you are interested and we’ll get together for a chat. Maybe we can travel together as well!

Enjoy this short interview with my dad, Grant. I can’t wait to post Evelyn’s interview – look for it next week!

Grant Briggs

White Rock beach, 2 – 3 years old

Well, it’s finally here! The first video interview of a living family member, not to mention, the oldest living member of the Briggs family – Grant Briggs (my dad!). Although he is the oldest of our family, at times he does tend to act like the youngest!

While interviewing my dad, it was interesting to see how serious he was at times. While I didn’t remind him this was supposed to be fun, I do have to remember that people are not used to doing interviews so it will take a little coaxing to get them to loosen up. I have to admit, I’m not used to doing interviews as well, it is wayyyyy outside my comfort zone. I’m hoping by doing this, other family members will have an insight into some of their family history and what others were like when they were younger and we didn’t know them then.

The questions I asked were given well ahead of time so Dad had plenty of time to prepare. Although this was his first interview for my blog, I’m hoping there will be more. I will be interviewing one of his siblings next, so keep an eye out for that to be posted. In the meantime, have a listen and get to know him a little more. If you think of any questions you would like to ask him, please make a comment and he would be very happy to answer. Or, the alternative, let me know and I can add it to the next time I chat with him.

Thanks to Dad for starting what I hope is a long list of interviews to come. Enjoy!
